Born on September 25, 1930, to Joseph John and Frances (Hajek) Hubl, John grew up with strong values that stayed with him throughout his life. He attended Sacred Heart Elementary School and Lawrence High School. He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps from 1952–1954 and was stationed at Camp Pendleton in Vista, California. On June 23, 1953, he married Eileen Menke, beginning a partnership that would span decades of family, farming, square dancing, and card games.
Farming wasn’t just his job — it was his calling. He spent his life raising cattle and hogs and working the land he loved, continuing to farm until the age of 80 but continued to run the combine during harvest until age 91! Whether in the fields or the barn, he was happiest with dirt on his boots and work to be done.
He enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s activities, playing cards, square dancing, listening to Big Joe Polka music, watching Lawrence Welk, reading the newspaper cover to cover, and keeping up with the world on CNN. After retiring from the farm, most mornings began with coffee, cards and conversation at Dick’s Place.
He was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Church, Knights of Columbus and the Lawrence American Legion.
He is survived by his children: Gene (Eileen) Hubl; Darrell Hubl; Nancy (Don) Lemke; and Judy (Burt) Schroer. He was a proud grandfather to Katie (Jeff) Loshonkohl, Jeff (Jennifer) Hubl, Ryan (Jaycee) Schroer, Emily (Brent) Roberts, Rachel (Gregg) Schlueter, Michael (Amy) Schroer, Daniel Schroer, and Kevin (Karigan) Schroer, and a beloved great-grandfather to 20 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by sister-in-law Frances Hubl.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Eileen; his son Kenneth; granddaughter Jena Schroer; and other family members including his brothers and sisters: Alois (Randi) Hubl, Rose (John) Janda, Charles Hubl, twin brother Bill (Patricia) Hubl; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Vince (Sally) Menke, Thelma (Glen) Koester, Alice (Ed) Svoboda Adrian (Maureen) Menke, and Lola (Albert) Yetman.
His family finds comfort knowing that somewhere, Grandpa is probably enjoying a fresh cup of coffee, a good hand of cards, and still keeping an eye on all of us.
